This house has quite a convoluted history!

Somewhat unrelated to this story Montrose but about your writings on architectural details: check today's "Tuesday Blogwrap" for the *red cornice*, mid-row in Tom Rupolo's/Urban photo :-).

About sticky keys of late: It is very possible that they stick and delay while the advertisements are flashing. I've had that experience and just waited until the ads finished reloading or whatever it is they do.

Notice the *red cornice* mid-row on this Tom Rupolo/Urban photo :-). Where is expert Montrose on this architectural detail? ha :-)

Legion, did you write that poem yourself? It is truly awesome. At first I thought it was copied and pasted from some place. I am so sorry about your mom. I will take time to re-read your poem.

I tried to get to the OT today before it is too late, but not doing so well. Incidentally, Legion, I also remember trying catching bees with cupped hands. It happened only once! haha

tybur quote:
"(I've always thought the triangle north of Union Should be called something else since their slope doesn't lead to a park...)"

Triangle above Union Street; or
Triangle north of Union Street

Tybur, maybe you can turn this into something like the
Triangle Below Canal Street (Tribeca). At this hour I am not coming up with much.

Or, how about Trinoslo, the "no" because it is "north" and also as you pointed out, there is *no* slope to the park there. Or, perhaps Trinosloka (the "k" for the K in "park").

See I think you can do much better than this meager attempt.

Great post EmilyNonko. I think I'll mark May 24 on my calendar each year, as Brooklyn Bridge Day.

I see this was on another blog but wouldn't have seen it there.

"young transient homeless ... Portland .. on a circuit from San Diego, San Francisco, Portland, Vancouver CA, and points up to Alaska."
by 1910 at 2:14 PM

Another component to the transient kids/adult-travelers, such as mentioned above about Portland, OR, is the added financial burdens to cities and towns they stop in. Because they are traveling, they reflect numbers in excess of the *truly impoverished and homeless who live in a city and need genuine help*. When the travelers come through, in one town I know of specifically, there are outcries for more outdoor toilet facilities and shelters and more police presence is required. So they are supported both by city governments and panhandling. And as already mentioned, business owners suffer loss of business because local shoppers don't want to put up with their aggressive behaviors.

I just googled "crustie" with a "c" and there is quite a bit of explanation. It is called a subculture. Some have been observed with platinum debit cards, they like college towns ... and more ...

Rob is correct. I went to a talk about this one time, or I would not know about it. The (usually) young people trek up from who knows where, up the coast of California, all the way up the Pacific northwest stopping at different towns and congregating there. They have favorite towns and Portland is one of them. Most people think they are homeless. They usually have a philosophy that they are trekking for peace and the more they trek, the more peace they will create in the world, or the more peaceful they will become as individuals (go figure). Usually they create chaos in a community with their dogs and
congregate by businesses, then the business-owners lose customers. Rob is correct that they are usually homeless by choice. And they collect change from people to support themselves while they travel (trek for their world philosophy).

I often wonder, however, if they are casualties of the generation without adequate parenting, ie, parents who themselves have been blown out by drugs, divorce, etc., and they really do not have much hope. They also have favorite places in India, and there are some who go up to New York, as Rob said. Pot and other drugs are a part of their philosophy for traveling for peace.

Anyway, the advice given was to not support their traveling lifestyle (unless one wants to), because this is a transient lifestyle choice. I tried to Google this and did not have the right key words I guess to get the info. Rob said they are called "krusties", but I have just heard "trekkers".

It is surprising how many people do not know this, even in communities in which they congregate.

"Last thing - comparing PS to Paris is laughable. This guy needs to get out more." By dirty_hipster 10:29 AM

The Memorial Arch at the Grand Army Plaza and its circular traffic problems, are often compared to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and its circular traffic problems. The GAP Arch heading into PS is said to have been pattered after the one in Paris and is often called the "Arc de Triomphe of Brooklyn". This is googleable.

Thank you for bringing attention to the old Mohawk Hotel, Montrose. It must have been quite a process going from "sealed up", to renovation and apartments. This is a beautiful treasure.

Many here have blamed the owner, yet from reading Minard's posts, it sounds as if the *tenants* have a great deal to do with this partial demolition:

Minard at 1:01 PM --The owner wanted to restore the building from top to bottom, and was in negotiations with three tenants for buyouts. . .

Minard at 11:29 AM -- The three tenants in this building were just trying to make a killing, but they overplayed their hand and were evicted by the DOB ...

---------
Again, Rent Control has nothing to do with income. It is just a policy that has been in place for decades. It used to be a coveted situation, yet as many people here have mentioned, RC may have become a tangled situation that led to this sad demolition.

Mr. B,

I envisioned a t-shirt with the letters "brownstoner. com", printed large and bold (like the sweatshirt you wore on the Martha tv show), so one could not miss the message from a distance.

While I *like* this t-shirt and the drawing of the house, the lettering is small and in cursive, which makes it harder to read from a distance. Or would it have the large, bold letters of the web site on the back of the shirt?

No time for me to read all the above comments, so hope this isn't a repeat, etc.

Not sure I understand this BFF example, exactly. Long Island Eddie may possibly redeem himself if he buys his women some accessories at the Fort Greene Flea.

(well right there may be the problem unless they are his girlfriend and sister, etc).

bumblef*ck brooklyn (?) lol ! *Rob* LPC

How can one interpret that as racist? Then use other name-calling and insults on top of that. Intelligence words seems to be the insulting words du jour. When will this stop on Brownstoner?

Get a grip. Rob wasn't being racist and it was someone else who first brought up the subject of taxes. (It is easy to see why a person who pays a great deal of taxes [1:57 pm] would be upset by the taxes issue and so may be forgiven for this.)

Attacks on Rob are not only unnecessary but way off-base. See, worked on saying that without name-calling.

bumblef*ck brooklyn! Could be anyplace in US, California, or even bumblef*ck Norway, sorry Benson. Seriously witty, I may appropriate bumblef*ck, USA, if I can remember it.

To anyone who is reading this thread for the LPC issue, they may be in need of an apology from the extra baggage here, including this.

BTW, the USA is soon to be in deep bumblef*ck, if the stimulus doesn't work.

I am somewhat new to all of this, or just doing it again. While there must be some wonderful brokers, I read that because of their financial interest, they usually will *not* tell you this is the wrong time to buy. With most of them, it is always the right time to buy.

Dear 11217, was my post negative to you in any way? My meaning is that I usually cannot post multiple times in one day and 9-5 is a figurative expression for a day. My writing is not negative to you in any way. I think I expressed my meaning if you will read the rest. It is really rather benign and general. I have no desire to tussle with you as I respect your writing and your concerns. Please accept my apology if I have offended you. It is just that I am not the bkplebe. Let us not offend the bkplebe.

Hello, 11217, I am not the bkplebe, just cannot post 9-5. Don't mean that you do, either, but there seem to be several who do and much of it is about personal lives. I appreciate a poster with some knowledge as well as those with humor. We don't all have to agree on a point of view, just because there are several represented here. We take what seems fitting to us and go with that.

I cannot refute a viewpoint unless I can study the matter a bit - some of these issues would take some googling and I'm sure the info is out there without arguments. There is plenty of study that must go into large financial decisions. There are many fine points of view on this blog and many posters have much experience saving me time and pointing to resources I may not find alone.
