Backdoor Replacement

backdoor-0410.jpg
We need to replace an old storm door in the back (the black one in the picture). Some have suggested an iron gate door so we can have the dutch door we have open at night and feel safe. Others are saying just another light metal storm door with a screen/storm window switchability like the one we have now. Any suggestions, and references of places and installers?- Thanks

Local Parking lots, CH,CG

Does anyone have any information or recommendations of local parking lots in Coble Hill or Carroll Gardens?. This would be a long term/yearly thing. I know there's a lot on Butler a little past Smith, anyone park there? Thanks for any info.

Anyone Know a Glass Guy?

Anyone Know a Glass Guy?

Hey, out there, I need to get a frameless shower door rehung (the one on the left doesn't close all the way), and have the rubber lining of the door replaced. I can't remember where we got the setup (and the guys who installed it were subcontractors hired by the glass people). Anyone know who can do this work? I'm in Cobble Hill.

Anna the owner of Boy luv Girl is a partner in the boutique. I am thinking "lower level" is a polite way of saying basement.

As the below quote from the owner states, they didn't close because they couldn't survive in this neighborhood. They chose not to sign another lease. There are plenty of non "30-something slacker inbred middlewestern hiptards " who not only buy comics in this neighborhood, but make them as a living (as seen in their 'local artist' section of the shop). If you look at any movie listing these days and notice the effect the comics industry has on the movie industry, it doesn't seem so sad. Some would say being normal with a "real " job is the stuff sadness (and BS) is made of, but to each their own.

From the owner:

“Our lease came up and we realized that we were either going to do this another five to 10 years, at which point it becomes a CAREER, in big letters, or not sign on again and do something different. That’s basically it. Of course, there are a thousand variables in there, all of which would be very boring and involved. In the end, the store was great to do for five years, but not something we wanted to be doing until we retired. So it was time to move on.”

I wonder if the people on the block will whine as loud as the people on Hoyt street did when Mamary tried to open his place. In my opinion its a win too.

"You see, unlike you, who has still yet to cite an incident or fact",

So me being called a jew boy having pennies thrown at my feet multiple times when I was an adolescent doesn't count as an incident or fact?

Once again, I have many many facts and incidents all through my childhood up throughout my life here, but when you don't believe it and consider me a liar, why bother?

The difference between you and me Benson, is that i'll buy Moynihan's book because it sounds interesting, I was there and will be able to relate, and I don't completely discount your position at all. I bet there's even excerpts of his book that support my life's experiences.

You on the other hand, are set in your ways like so many other people, unwilling to be changed, and that likely affects your opinions on things that span far beyond Italians and landmarking.

Posted by: lifer at July 20, 2010 8:45 AM in response to Carroll Gardens Historic District May Grow

I can site many instances that I was witness to and victim of. I don't feel the need to list that stuff here. I can tell you that if you were white and not Italian when I was growing up your name automatically became "Jew boy" which was my name for alot of my adolescence (coupled with the throwing of pennies at my feet).

I am not making Italians "bogeymen". I have had many Italian friends in this neighborhood growing up that I am still friends with that my parents were best friends with, who I grew up with, whom I raise my family with to this day, but to say that we are lying about our experiences is not right.

I didn't grow up in a Black neighborhood so I can't speak of that. I can speak of where I am from and I have no reason to exaggerate.
I am not stereotyping all Italians, unfortunately stereotypes exist for a reason, there are good people and mean people in every race and creed.

The fact of the matter is when the new people of all backgrounds other than Italians started moving in to these neighborhoods, the "Bogeymen" put these people all into one big generalzed stereotyped label, they started calling them "Liberals".

I haven't wanted to jump into this, but as smeone who grew up in the late 60's, and 70's on the border of CH, CG, and I concur with Cobblehiller, etc. I believe we are the same age or close, where Christopher is somewhat younger (if his profile is correct which says he is 33), which means he was in elementary school in the early to mid 80's middle school close to the 90's.
The 60's and 70's were alot different from the 80's. I can go on forever about personal experiences that are not exaggerated with the racial hostility. The 80s was a different time. The hostility certainly, absolutely existed.

I started going to 213 when Mezcal's closed after 20 years on Atlantic. I was sad and happy to see they had adopted one of the servers that must have been a teenager when I started going to Mezcals. I thought 213 was pretty good, too bad, there are very few sit down Mexican restaurants run by actual Mexicans around here. For lunch I go to the Mexican grocery on Hoyt between Atlantic and State, thats some good stuff, I heard about it on here from Rob, I think.

rob, thanks, I painted that for the original owners like 7 years ago, I am always surprised its held up so long.

I heard from one of the construction guys there it was going to be a bar. I'm not so sure the Brooklyn Papers unidentified source with "sketchy details" should be taken too seriously, but you never know.

The 6th pint glass is the Soldiers and Sailors arch (Grand Army Plaza). I have it on good authority the pint glasses will continue (and with new designs) via the web and over at Brooklyn Tattoo where Adam Suerte resides (he designed them with Artezn owner Jessica Furst). Artezn's last day coincides with the Atlantic Ave Artwalk this weekend, there are sure to be some deals to be had. I believe Artezn vendors are taking over the sidewalk around her shop with tables to sell stuff. Should not be missed if you dig the place, I am sure she's trying to unload as much as possible. It was a great shop and a nice run.

Marc just started the new menu, like this week, so the new stuff is really new. The artichoke hearts and ice cream are a throwback from his Blue Star days, and if they are anything like they used to be are worth it.

I went up to the 20th floor and was able to look at the views. Pretty amazing. There is a corner apt that looks straight up the Manhattan Bridge's skirt, with views of the Williamsburg and Brooklyn bridge all in one shot. And on the other side is a pretty awesome shot of the Williamsburg Savings bank and all the way back to the Verrazano. Sweet.

Thanks everyone,
My biggest regret is that the painting I am working on as we speak would have gone over well with you guys, its a 3'X5' painting of the outside of the Carroll street station as it was before they started constructing the huge building over it ( something brought up on B'stoner a bit). Its going over where the cookies were.

I paint ghosts alot, Once in that very bar I drew the doggystyle one on a napkin, made a painting out of it, put it in my shop, and people wouldn't stop commenting on it and offering to buy it. Due to the response, I started a series. "dead can dance" . Ghosts are a metaphor for a few things for me. Hope they didnt offend.

I was an unintended newbie last night. I was setting up the art show for the opening tonight, when Julie, the owner of the Exit told us we had to be done by 6 because of a function. Mitch the first bartender of the night then said it was a Brownstoner gig. I log on everyday, and sometimes comment on the mundaner things like restaurants and facts about Cobble Hill (born and raised). But never ventured out to a gathering. It was nice to meet Denton and Dave (who apologized in advance if he had ever said anything disparaging to me in the past). I have to say, I didn't expect so many people to be dressed up a la suits/ dress shirts, I felt underdressed. Everyone seemed nice enough tho-

And right around the corner from the Bell House

I'm not sure how many cat burglars would actually carry a gun. They usually want to get in and out without a big scene ( unlesss they are doing a home invasion type thing). I could very well be wrong. An older neighbor has used a dog sign in the front door window (since theirs died many years ago) and has been pretty lucky.

Christopher, thats pretty crazy about the machete in the umbrella stand, thats exactly what I have , no joke. Got it at the old army navy store that used to be on Canal street in the 80's
