The maple with Nunu caramel is insane, and the Blue Marble kids are the kind of Brooklyn enterprise we're always pining for. They do it all right, and they're growing in a really interesting way. Much respect!

He was there on Sunday, wasn't supposed to be there Saturday. He'll be back soon.

This is a perfect post for the new "Community" section, where vendors and shoppers can interact. http://community.brooklynflea.com

You can also always see the previous week's layout until Friday at noon, when we post the new one. http://www.brooklynflea.com/layout.html If you let us know which market and the general location we can often help out.

enrique wrote a review about Sam's on December 4, 2008 1:55 PM

Love everything about Sam's: focus on one item, pizza and pizza alone (do not order salad); the erratic oddball of a waiter/owner/barkeep; closes when it feels like it; the misleading sign (simply not a steak place); the off-limits back room (try having a birthday/pizza party there--not an option). Also love as everything it's not: showy, fancy, predictable, pandering.

The crust is doughy, thick, crispy, and bubbly. The cheese isn't too thick, and it's super-stretchy like in commercials. The sauce is simple, sweet, and garlicky. The toppings don't overstretch: pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, garlic if you want. A Peroni to wash it down.

I can't believe this building hasn't been sold every time I walk by. And I talk about loving Sam's more than I go there. But you should go once before it's history.

Part bar, part resto, always feels a little indecisive as to which it wants to be more. Certainly a nice place for a 10-person birthday party or the like, you can make noise, laid-back vibe, nice options with the small and larger plates. The food is not memorable in any real way though, which for a restaurant isn't amazing.

enrique wrote a review about Habana Outpost on July 15, 2008 2:48 PM

Has such the right local vibe, and the proof of that is how packed the joint always is, even on Mondays and Tuesdays. Favorite thing is how free and easy Habana always feels, no pressure to do anything but hang. So the only strike against is it's too much of a zoo sometimes! Corn=yum.

enrique wrote a review about Applewood on July 14, 2008 12:33 PM

Such a peaceful, classy joint, and so clearly a labor of love. It's quiet and low-maintenance the way a Manhattan institution like Chanterelle is, but I was hoping for a few more bells and whistles in terms of service and straight-up taste than what I expected. Places like this that promote their approach and attentiveness sometimes leave the wow out of the actual meal. But it remains the place I send Manhattanites looking for secret Brooklyn spots (and friends with parents in town), and the vibe is still unique even in the sea of Brooklyn gastronomes.
