I love this place, though admittedly, I'm no expert. I defer to my friend from Thailand whose entire family goes there and loves it.

I normally don't like vinyl flooring, but I think the Novalis products are pretty convincing and come in a variety of wood looks:

I don't usually order dessert, but the one time I did, I got tiramisu that was still frozen in the middle and tasted like freezer burn. It's reliable, with dinners and pizza being decent, but harder to rate when Gino's is 3 blocks away with much better food.

When I saw friend cupcakes, I thought you might have been referring to the Robicelli's fried cupcakes that were SUPPOSED to be at Chip Shop over the weekend:

I get the warm and fuzzies every time I see that neon sign. Such great memories of going there with my mom after a day of shopping on 86th street. Last time I went 2 years ago, the ice cream soda and burger I had was still just as good as when I was a kid. I think it's still the same family that's owned it all these years.

Bay Ridge's culture in my opinion is food. Not high end, but down home good eats of many ethnicities. Thanks Kara!

DitmasSnark, totally agree with you about the kitchen.

There's a recipe for chalkboard paint which is basically 1 cup of flat latex paint with 2 tbsp of unsanded grout:

There is also black chalkboard contact paper.

I have tile now and I regret putting it in. I wish I put in marmoleum.
I love the look of wood, but I see how there are gaps here and there between the boards, I can't imagine that in a kitchen.

We put in an Ikea kitchen. I used a thermofoil door instead of a wood door. I regret the door choice as I don't think it's held up well. And I think that when the thermofoil trim pieces are cut, it doesn't look as neat as the wood door choice either.

But I really wanted cream cabinets - the Adel Cream are discontinued anyway.

But other than that, They are functionally great.

Do wonder about resale though - would people be turned off by Ikea cabinets?

I think the larger size he quoted you is standard. That is what I currently have and I was able to install my dishwasher just fine.

No - It's been quiet with the pad and it keeps it localized in the kids room. And the kid get his energy out. Really!

Everyone was happy with it, but then again my friend was also OK with putting carpet down in addition. Unlike the OP's neighbor.

How about a trampoline with a pad underneath? My friends bought this for her kids and keeps it in his room, with a pad and carpet underneath. It's been a sanity saver for everyone all round:

From their website:

A great bicycle frame must be rigid enough to optimize the power you put into each pedal stroke, yet flexible enough to absorb the bumps, divots and vibrations of the road. Inside every bamboo plant, stronger-than-steel “power fibers” run through a matrix of flexible, foamy tissue.

Stronger than steel? Really? I doubt it would be up against a hacksaw. But would it split up and impale someone?

I have the full size Duets. I love them, but the washer is a replacement for a lemon. Luckily, I bought the warranty with the set at Lowe's with a 10% off coupon.

Lowe's was good about honoring the warranty and replaced when the tech couldn't fix.

I asked the tech if he repairs a lot of the Duets. He said he fixes lots of different new front loaders with a lot of electronics. All brands seem to have a glitch now again and he didn't seem think it was any one brand - high end or low. Just make sure to get the the warranty was his word of advice.

Once replaced, we've been going strong and I now love it. I have seen a drop in my water bill and I love the capacity. If you have the room for them, go for it!

You know, I have been finding parking a lot easier lately also! I was going to ask you guys about this. And someone else on one of the recent open threads said that they found that traffic during their commute to Jersey City from Brooklyn was also getting lighter, theorizing it could very well be a reflection of the times. (Sorry I can't remember who that was).

I also observed that my trips upstate have also seen less traffic. Hmm, maybe that poster was on to something.
new2, I guess you can always try the street for a while to see if it's feasible (if you trust the car on the street)

Is your dad working? Does he plan on regularly using his car for errands or is it for the occaissional trip out of town? My friend lives on that block and she is a SAHM with kids at school during the day.

She tells me she can only deal with the parking because she is at home to work with the alternate side parking hours. In fact, she plans her Fairway/Costco shopping days around those hours and makes sure she is back 30 min before it's OK to park on that side and leave the car there to unload her groceries.

Otherwise she won't use it for errands but for a trip out of town. When she was working, she just sucked it up and paid for the garage on 11th street. That was 6 years ago and I think she told me it was $400/month at the time.

Is the festival set up yet for this weekend? The fest is fun, but it detracts from the beauty of seeing the volume of the trees in bloom I think.

I'm also amazed at how quickly the trees turned. I checked the status map 2 days ago and it was almost all still pre bloom.

Having lived in Nyack, it will take well over an hour door to door Paul, not to mention a pain. But you may find it's worth it. Nyack is fun.

Posted by: HmmWhichNeighborhood at April 21, 2009 11:22 AM in response to Open Thread

You could also check out Maplewood, NJ. It too is liberal, artsy, historic homes and a pretty easy commute. High taxes, and schools are not as good as Montclair, maybe on par with Nyack.

I also used to live in Nyack too. Nice vibe, a little small and the commute hell-ish. I don't think the schools are as good in Nyack as they are in Montclair/Verona/Glen Ridge.

I think we're Montclair bound as well. I keep saying it and it hasn't happened yet though.
The schools are the tipping point for us. We like a lot of the public options here in NYC but the K cut off date in NJ is same day as my boys birthday and the suburbs allow you to hold back before starting K.

Posted by: HmmWhichNeighborhood at April 7, 2009 10:30 PM in response to The Shifting School Equation

One reason I would consider a private school is that they have an earlier Kindergarten cutoff date - Aug 31 or Sept 1 seem to be a common date - as opposed to Dec.

I have 2 boys with October 1st birthdays. While not too close to the NYC public cutoff of Dec, they are on the young side. If I went private I would have no choice but to wait until the next year to send them, with the hope of them being a bit more mature for K.

Even if I did do this for their first year in K then had them back into public at 1st grade, I can't help if there might be problems, since redshirting is not allowed in NYC.

Now, if I moved to NJ, most towns in NJ have Oct 1 as their cutoff date and redshirting is very much the norm, especially for boys. If I held them back, they wouldn't be the oldest as everyone holds back their kids and not necessarily too very close to the cutoff.

But it's hard for me to wrap my head around making the move to NJ or any suburb. My husband is all for it, as he is getting a bit worn out from Brooklyn life. He didn't grow up here, but I did and it's a hard thing for me to decide. I've ben agonizing over this decision these many months about moving to Montclair (the only place I think I can do this), but I haven't yet pulled the trigger.

Since we're speaking about schools anyway, I just saw this article on the Daily News website about how Slope PreK's are also busting at the seams. They've cited the number of applicants per PreK spot for each PS school. I can't imagine it getting better a year later for K. With this new influx of ex-private students, where PS schools will be then?

I love the park and the homes around there.
What school is it zoned for - PS 102?

Every Halloween they host a really fun festival for the kids. I think they sometimes have a winter event also.

I've heard of quiet drug user activity, late at night, maybe deeper into the park away from the homes.

You're at the start of the bike path and the pier, a few blocks from a great bar - Three Jolly Pigeons and The Family Store - awesome middle eastern take out food. Oh, and Casa Pepe too.

Have you tried a trundle bed? I agree the younger one would be too young for a bunk, but a pull out trundle might work nicely. It could at least offer a short term solution until you decide what to do.

Italiana's idea of a move to Bay Ridge is a good one. Check it out, you may be pleasantly surprised - if you can work out the commute. And you will do well for schools too.

I was told that it didn't qualify as 'finished' in NYC if it wasn't tiled. Not sure what the ramifications of that would be other than not being able to include the sq. footage in the total for you building.
