Flea Ink
Flea vendors, newsmakers—same same.
No one can say enough good things about Mile End, and the Times finally files a review on the year-old Montreal/Jewish deli, piling on the praise like so much smoked meat. Owner Noah Bernamoff now has a full dinner program in place and is baking homemade bread daily. Mile End is back at the Flea this spring—on Sundays, in Williamsburg, with smoked meat, and sometimes bagels and lox.
Some of NYC's best food bloggers band together under the Serious Eats name, and they recently spotlighted the almighty Solber Pupusas (above). It's nice to see Red Hook vendors like Rafael get some winter love while we wait for the warm-weather carts to return to the ballfields and the Fleas. Serious Eaters agree that the pork, cheese and jalapeno pupusa is the lunchtime winner.
Doughnut Plant is opening up a new location in the Chelsea Hotel, and if you've ever tasted one of their tres leches donuts this is big news. But the real scoop here is that Flea vendor Don Wood of Fat Dog Fabrication constructed the tables and coffee bar in the new shop—a deal struck at the Flea itself, in Don's always interesting mezzanine booth. He's back up there this weekend with his minimalist mix of concrete and metal tables, stands and of course birdbaths.
