Flea Food Film
June 30, 2010 | Filed In: Blog
As part of our partnership with the NY Food Film Festival, which took place over the past weekend, the FFFers tapped Food Curated's Liza de Guia to create a short film about the phenomenon of food at ze Flea. We like how it came out, even if Senor is a total goof in it. Check it out.
Jess Bites Flea—Eton Fried Chicken
June 29, 2010 | Filed In: Blog, Jess Bites Flea
What: Sweet, sticky and slightly spicy, moist and crispy Chicken Wings with Plum Sauce. An ode (and lesson) to all Asian-inspired chicken wings everywhere. (Bon Chon beware!)
How much: $5 for a fistful, with some crunchy slaw on the side.
What else: Eton is the dumpling master you've heard about and hopefully tasted at his Carroll Gardens shop—along with pork buns, ramen, and Hawaiian shaved ices. But as of now, his chicken wings are exclusive to ze Flea, and the only thing he's serving there too.
When+Where: Saturdays in Fort Greene and at his shop at Sackett and Smith St.

The sun was out, the deals were hot, as were these Fleasters. Check out what you missed if you didn't make it.
No Flea This Sunday Only
June 26, 2010 | Filed In: Blog
There's no Flea at One Hanson this Sunday, June 27, only. The venue booked a wedding a long time ago, so we're taking the one date off. We'll be back July 4—when the Flea is very much open—and forever and ever on Sundays after that. Sorry for the hiccup, we'll be back soon!
Scavenger Hunt Item—June 26

There is no market this Sunday ONLY at One Hanson (sadface!), but the Hunt soldiers on outdoors in Fort Greene on Saturday. See what you can find—or, find what helps you see.
When you find the item above, which can be hidden in any vendor booth, it's yours, absolutely free! Then we post your photo with the generous vendor here on the blog on Monday. Only one winner per calendar month. Items posted every Friday around Noon.

Finders/Keepers—June 19+20

So much enthusiasm for jewelry on Father's Day weekend—it was a mother of a Hunt! Herewith, all the fanfare these folks deserve.
Saturday: Patrick Anderson (right) a Fort Greene local, arrived bright and early to score this sweet pair of earrings for his wife, Shannon. Aw! They're both loyal Fleasters (notice Patrick's Live Poultry T), and they "recruit their Manhattan friends to the Flea and like fixing up furniture found at the market." Loyalty rewarded.
Patrick poses with gracious vendor Christina Stankard, who has been bringing her delicate jewels) to the Flea since Day One. In her own words, "I guess the thing I like the most is the community that's evolved around the market. I have so many friends there—vendors and customers—I look forward to it every weekend. Just shows how cool Brooklyn is!" Well-played. Find Christina every Saturday (E30) and Sunday (#59).
Sunday: Adelaide (left) is a police officer, Brooklyn Heights dweller, and self-proclaimed Flea regular, admitting that it was her first time at One Hanson. (That's OK!)
She found the lovely clothespin necklace offered by Erica Bradbury, whose biz Species by the Thousands has been Fleaing if not since Day One then for a really long time. Of her wares—which include her coveted ribcage pendants—she says, "I sell limited-quantity some-of-a-kind jewelry at very reasonable prices as well as higher-end precious-metal original designs a bit under retail. I also have SUPER-soft and lightweight organic cotton t-shirts with my drawings printed on them." Her Bearded Man design is an unqualified hit (just like the tunes of her "analog cave psych band" Long Distance Poison will be soon; they're playing in Williamsburg Saturday night). Saturdays and Sundays, every weekend.

Scavenger Hunt Items—June 19+20
June 18, 2010 | Filed In: Blog, Scavenger Hunt
For Fathers Day shoppers, money clips, ties, blazers, comic books, and nudie mags abound at the Flea, as always. But the Hunt this week is for the ladies, with a double-dose of baubles. Hey, if your dad digs clothespin necklaces, more power to him.
Note: The Fort Greene outdoor market happens every Saturday; One Hanson is on Sundays indoors. Both 10am-5pm.
When you find one of the items above, which can be hidden in any vendor booth, it's yours, absolutely free! Then we post your photo with the generous vendor here on the blog on Monday. Only one winner per calendar month. Items posted every Friday around Noon.

Crochet Word of the Day
June 17, 2010 | Filed In: Blog
Angie from England has been making these cool Crochet Words of the Day, featuring terms from "Old Blighty" sewn into patchwork-pattern circle frames. We like 'em, and so apparently does the renowned Martha Stewart Crafts Department, which blogged the series recently. (FYI "toad in the Hole"=sausages in Yorkshire pudding batter.)
Angie's biz is ASIS (for Angela Spencer's Irresistible Stuff), and you can find her at Fort Greene and One Hanson every weekend (she shares with Species by the Thousand on Sundays). Her knitted rings/necklaces/bracelets are popular, as are her new line of screenprinted T's (some on silk!), crocheted booties for kids, and more.
Check out this story from today's Wall Street Journal featuring Angie and fellow Fleasters Erica from Species by the Thousand, Jessica DeCarlo, and Artisan Emporia.
