Jess Bites Flea—The Good Batch
May 27, 2010 | Filed In: Blog, Jess Bites Flea
What: The Good Batch's handmade Dutch stroopwafels, but specifically, The Lovely Rita (right): a pistachio waffle cookie with a decadent but not too sweet white-chocolate filling. And believe it or not, this cookie is perfectly gluten-free for all you glut-phobes.
How much: $3.
What else: This lovely munch only comes out for special appearances in sweetie Anna's weekly booth. If Rita's unavailable (being a meter maid?), try the Classic (left, caramel filling with subtle spices on a classic cookie), or the Bonfire (betwixt a cocoa waffle cookie: roasted meringue, salted caramel sauce, and dark chocolate ganache—whoa!).
Where from: The stroopwafel is a Dutch treat traditionally made with thin layers of small, round waffles, sandwiching a grainy caramel, honey, or maple syrup filling. The cookies are at once deliciously firm yet pliable, but it's the syrup (or "stroop") that holds it all together. Try placing a stroopwafel on top of your hot coffee or tea cup for a few minutes to make the cookie even softer and the gooey insides even gooier.
When+Where: Saturdays in Fort Greene, and online at thegoodbatch.com.

Really nice Fleas both days this weekend, thanks for comin' out. Stylish gals Scavenged skillfully.
From left (click to enlarge):
1. Saturday: Mindy (right) is a regular Fleaster, but this was her first venture into Hunt territory—and wouldn't you know she emerged victorious! She's a vintage lover, so it makes sense that she loves her new vintage '80s clutch. She found it before noon.
She's with smiling Sharon, who with hubby Carl are Hairy Mary's Vintage, the former LES shop now with a humble home at the Flea. They commute from scenic Woodstock, and are a fixture in L11 at the main entrance since the get-go with their colorful, flowery, flouncy vintage and reconstructed dresses, tops, coats, footwear and accessories, from Victorian to the '80s, at prices we can all afford. They're at One Hanson on the center aisle every Sunday too.
2. Sunday: Maybe Lisa (left) from the Slope found the headscarf in awesome Chika's booth due to their apparently kindred spirits? It's an intense photo, two strong ladies. We love it. Lisa's son loves the Flea and convinced her mom to hit One Hanson on Sunday, and voila, she walks out a prizewinner.
Chika's biz Mercato features pretty handmade scarves, totes, T's, and more, with a sort of flowery-minimal aesthetic that Fleasters can't seem to get enough of. Chika's crafty in the way we love, and she's at the Saturday and Sunday markets every weekend.

Jess Bites Flea—Early Bird Granola
May 20, 2010 | Filed In: Blog, Jess Bites Flea
What: Choc-A-Doodle-Do, a new addition to Nekisia's healthy, crunchy, perfectly combined olive-oil-baked, salty-sweet, snacktastic granola. This one has—you guessed it—dark chocolate and flecks of dried coconut.
How much: $8.
What else: Aloha Recipe (w/mango and macadamia nuts), Jubilee (cherry and pistachio), and the original, Farmhand's Choice (pecans and extra virgin olive oil).
How else: With yogurt or milk, on ice cream, for pies or baked sweet potato crusts, or on pretty much anything that can benefit the creativity flowing from each bag.
When+Where: Saturdays in Fort Greene—and online at earlybirdfoods.com.
Kids These Days

Our old pal db—he of Jungle Nation, NASA, Breakbeat Science, and global DJ stardom—is making a special Flea appearance on Saturday, unloading records, CDs, and T's from across the musical spectrum.
We're as psyched to see his son Max's cool line of machine-gun jewelry (above), under the tagline "War, What is Good For?!" (The apolitical Flea agrees.) They're $3.50 a pop.
Find db and Max in W25 (see this week's vendor layout when it's posted Friday at noon).
Farm Freshness
May 19, 2010 | Filed In: Blog
The Flea gets fresher and greener every week, a longtime dream of ours.
Starting this Saturday the Dancing Ewe farm in Granville, NY, begins selling its yummy Italian-style cheeses and Tuscan olive oil. Jody and Luisa's sheep farm—J met L as a cheesemaking apprentice in her native Tuscany—is a foodie (and Union Sq. Friday Greenmarket) fave, and their lamb is served at Mario Batali restos as well as Daniel. At the Flea here's what Ewe (and you) will have: pecorino (above) and caciotta cheeses, fresh from their farm; their new olive oil, harvested from Luisa's Maremma home region (New York already loves it); and if you're lucky their insane lamb merguez. J+L have big plans for the future, so welcome them warmly to the Flea so they can feed you even better.
Even more downhome, Val lives in Montclair, NJ, grows flowers on her property, is into arrangements and the like. Her new biz, Organic Blossoms, will mostly feature handtied flowers in funky and/or vintage midcentury vases, birdhouses, and the like. We're happy to encourage ambitious green thumbs and can't wait to see how Val spruces up the Flea on Saturday.
Happy spring.
Stuff+Things—Olde Good Things

What: Antique Hog Oiler from 1918—and Flea guessing-game. A hog oiler is exactly what it sounds like: piggies would rub up against its grooved cast-iron mechanism to lube and soothe their skin. All weekend, Paul was pulling crowds of people trying to guess its function. (Many tried, many failed.)
Who: Olde Good Things, who come with the world-class architectural salvage and perfectly altered antiques.
How much: $400 for the oiler.
What else: A tiny sampling of the OGT treasure trove: antique glass doorknobs, refashioned farm tables, garden and patio furniture and ornaments, giant mirrors with frames made from old tin ceilings, those cool iron building stars, and so much more.
When+Where: Saturdays near the Clermont entrance, Sundays at One Hanson to the left of the entrance (check the layout), or online at OldeGoodThings.com.
