Feelin' Folksy

DSCF1910.jpgDSCF1909.JPG
In case you missed it, the Dumbo markets are still open both Saturday and Sunday this weekend. In coming weeks, Jess is gonna be highlighting some of our fab vendors as we gear up for the reopening of the Fort Greene market next Saturday, April 18, as Dumbo continues on Sundays after that.

What sometimes looks dusty and worn to '09 Flea neophytes actually tells an expert (or curious shopper) a nuanced tale: A small carved duck could have been whittled by someone while hanging out on their front porch sipping on a mint julep. A chipped Howdy Doody doll (above, left) sitting on a baby chair might look scary, but it also conjures a time when a painted doll was a prized possession for American kiddies. (Remember Heidi Doody? Yeah, me neither. Why did she get shafted so hard?)

Susan from Sage Antiques in Yonkers has been a lively addition to the Flea this winter, bringing in folk art and antiques from all over every Saturday. (She'll be in Fort Greene too.) Get your heavy-duty, well-made meat cleavers (above, right) here, crafted in a time when locavore meant beheading chickens in your yard, not perusing Union Square. Learn your history, 'cause Susan's got a story for everything in her booth and more in this tiny little museum in the middle of the Flea.
