« Dear Mr. FantaFlea - »April 9, 2009Feelin' Folksy
What sometimes looks dusty and worn to '09 Flea neophytes actually tells an expert (or curious shopper) a nuanced tale: A small carved duck could have been whittled by someone while hanging out on their front porch sipping on a mint julep. A chipped Howdy Doody doll (above, left) sitting on a baby chair might look scary, but it also conjures a time when a painted doll was a prized possession for American kiddies. (Remember Heidi Doody? Yeah, me neither. Why did she get shafted so hard?) Susan from Sage Antiques in Yonkers has been a lively addition to the Flea this winter, bringing in folk art and antiques from all over every Saturday. (She'll be in Fort Greene too.) Get your heavy-duty, well-made meat cleavers (above, right) here, crafted in a time when locavore meant beheading chickens in your yard, not perusing Union Square. Learn your history, 'cause Susan's got a story for everything in her booth and more in this tiny little museum in the middle of the Flea. 76 Front #15, Sat Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: Comments |
